The City University of Mogadishu is a leading private, not-for-profit university committed to international excellence, high-quality teaching, an innovative approach to research, and life-changing student engagement activities.

Founded in 2012, City University of Mogadishu has established itself as a pioneering
institution offering cutting-edge curricula that inspire excellence in our students. All our programs are delivered through student-centric pedagogy that encourages creativity and a wholesome education. Our facilities ensure our students are equipped with practical knowledge and appropriate skills, a differentiating quality in the overall ability of our students. What We Do

The core business areas of CU are teaching, research and consultancy, technical and vocational education training, and community engagement. Our world-class research
facilities are spearheaded by the Research Monitoring and Evaluation (ROMEO) division and community engagement by our Community Engagement and Service Policy.

City University Learning Outcomes (CULOS)

City University Learning Outcomes (CULOS) are general, transferrable knowledge and skills that every City University graduate is expected to have met, regardless of the degree program. These Outcomes are developed through integrated curricular and co-curricular student experiences. These outcomes are achieved throughout the foundation program, the university-wide core courses, the degree program courses, and student experiences outside the classroom.  
The university-level student learning outcomes guide the development of degree programs and course-level learning outcomes. Instructors also use every opportunity to foster CULOS in their teaching and student assessment.

Below are the 8 CULOS:

    1.  Critical thinking: City University graduates will be able to engage in inquiry, value examination, and creative problem-solving.
    2. Communication: City University graduates will be able to communicate effectively and clearly both orally and in writing.
    3. Leadership & teamwork: City University graduates will be able to participate constructively and interact effectively with others to accomplish common goals.
    4.  Technological competence: City University graduates will be able to properly use and evaluate technology in their professions both ethically and securely.
    5. Research: City University graduates will be able to systematically investigate a research question, exploring, collecting, and analyzing evidence to establish facts and
      make informed conclusions.
    6.  Global awareness: City University graduates will be able to explain globalization and its impact on them and their society while understanding their own and other
      cultures and reacting to differences in an enlightened and socially responsible manner.
    7. National & Islamic issues: City University graduates will be able to discuss the main features of Islamic civilization as well as the history and socio-politics of the Somali
      people.
    8. Language: City University graduates will be able to communicate fluently in Somali and English, using the academic and professional conventions of these languages.

City University Educational Philosophy & Approaches

  • Learning Outcomes-Based Education: Student learning outcomes guide all curriculum development, instructional, and assessment practices at City University. Student learning outcomes refer to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes students are expected to learn at the university. Learning outcomes can be achieved at the university, program, course, and even lesson levels.
  • Contextualized Curriculum and Instruction: City University strives to offer instruction in real-world contexts whenever possible through case studies, problem-solving, examples, etc.Contextualized curriculum and instruction have proven advantageous for student learning and motivation.
  • Student-centered Teaching and Learning: Student-centred instruction requires students to be active and responsible participants in their own learning. Student-centered instruction focuses on student engagement and builds on every student’s ability and learning style. In other words, student-centered instruction is any well-structured, teacher-guided, student-centered activity that substantially involves students with the course content through talking and listening, writing, reading, and reflecting.

Governance of the City University of Mogadishu

Governance’ is a general and wide-ranging term that refers to the systems, structures, procedures, and rules by which the University makes key decisions on its affairs. It also
covers how it records those decisions, tells other people that the decisions have been taken, and is held accountable for them. The ultimate goal is that good governance doesn’t involve the decision-making and the day-to-day running of the University.

  • The Board of Trustees: The Board of Trustees is the highest authority in the City University. The university has a nationally and internationally respected Board of Trustees from academia and the business community. They help the university fulfill its mission by regularly overseeing and providing input. The board approves the university’s strategic plan, annual budget, and major policies and initiatives. They advocate for the university locally and
    internationally to build its capacity for today and tomorrow.
  • University Council: The University Council is the University’s supreme governing body, responsible for making all final decisions on matters of fundamental concern to the
    University, including our academic mission and strategic direction. It ensures that our various systems, structures, procedures, and rules are fit for purpose, that the University is being managed effectively, and that we meet all our legal obligations
  • Senate: The Senate is responsible for directing and regulating the academic life of the
    University, including teaching, research, exams, and the organization of our Colleges, Schools, and Departments. Its membership includes Heads of Department, Heads of
    College, the Provost, and other senior academic staff.

Key Administration and Faculty (President, Provost, VPs, Registrar, Deans & Heads)

The City University of Mogadishu boasts highly qualified educational leaders and administrators in Somalia.  The following are the key leaders and administrators of the City University of Mogadishu.

Abdullahi A. Barise

Dr. Abdullahi Barise is the Founding President of the City University of Mogadishu and a Member of its Board of Trustees. He is a respected scholar in educational psychology and social work. He received his PhD from McGill University in Canada and has previously taught at McGill University, the University of Regina, and Zayed University. Dr. Barise has significantly contributed to the research in his respective fields, such as Social Work, Educational Psychology, and Islamic Approaches to these areas. Over a decade ago, he returned to Somalia to lead the efforts of establishing the City University of Mogadishu.

Abdulkareem Jama

Abdulkareem Jama is the founding Executive Vice President and Provost of the City University of Mogadishu, Somalia. He has served in this role since 2012 and is also a member of the university’s senior leadership team. Jama is also the chair of the Heritage Institute for Policy Studies board in Mogadishu. In 2009, Jama became the Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the President of Somalia. He later served as the Minister of Information, Posts, and Telecommunications in the Federal Government of Somalia. Since leaving office, he has managed Hass Petroleum assets and operations in Somalia as Country Director, advised the Somali Government, and consulted on IT and telecommunications for the World Bank and private firms. Jama earned a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and a Master of Science in Telecommunications Networks from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He worked as a Network Engineer, Consultant, IT Manager, and Adjunct Professor of Information Technology in the United States for over 26 years before relocating to Mogadishu in 2009.

Eng. Yasin M. Barqadle

Eng. Barqadle is a Computer and Electronics Engineer by training and worked in the field Information Technology (IT) for decades. He taught Information Technology and Information Security courses at universities in the US. Professor Barqadle served as a senior Patent Examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He has examined over thousand patents and issued several hundred patents belonging to well-known tech companies. Professor Barqadle serves as the Sr VP for Academic Affairs, a position he has held since the establishment of City University of Mogadishu.

Dr. Afyare Elmi

Dr. Afyare Elmi is a research professor and the VP for Research at the City University of Mogadishu. He is also a research fellow at the Heritage Institute for Policy Studies in Mogadishu. Afyare was previously an Associate Professor at Qatar University’s Gulf Studies Program. In addition to his book, Understanding the Somalia Conflagration: Identity, Political Islam, and Peacebuilding (Pluto Press), he has authored or co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and a dozen policy papers. Dr. Elmi holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration from Ryerson University, a Master of Arts in Political Science from Brock University, a second Master of Arts in Education Policy from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Alberta. He has also provided commentaries and published opinion/editorial articles in leading international media outlets.

Dr. Mohamud Garre

Dr. Mohamud Garre is a senior director and a research fellow at the City University of Mogadishu. He is a researcher and educator who worked in various public and private institutions in the United Kingdom and Somalia, accumulating over 20 years of experience in migration, education, social justice, and social care. His most recent roles included serving as vice president of research and student development at the City University of Mogadishu and director of research at the Heritage Institute for Policy Studies based in Mogadishu. Dr. Garre previously served as a social work team manager at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London, United Kingdom. Dr Garre’s research interests lie in education, migration, refugees and displacement, child protection, social justice, and human rights. Dr Garre holds a doctorate in education from the University of Nottingham and an MSW from Brunel University, London.

Dr. Oyetola Oniwide

Dr. Oyetola Oniwide is a Professor of Public Administration and currently serves as the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the City University of Mogadishu. With over twenty years of research and teaching experience in Nigeria and Uganda, his interests lie in public policy, human resource management, local government administration, corporate governance, and development administration. Professor Oniwide has extensively published in these areas of Political Science and Public Administration in international journals and books.

Daud Yussuf Mohamed,

Daud Yussuf Mohamed, the Founding Dean of the College of Business and Economics at the City University of Mogadishu, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the International University of Africa, an MSc in Economics from the International University of Africa, and an MBA in Banking and Finance from Sudan International University. With over 17 years of experience in instruction and management across institutions in Sudan, Nigeria, and Somalia, Mr. Daud has made significant contributions to the academic and administrative landscape. At City University, he has served as the second Director of the Foundation and ESL Institution. He has been instrumental as the Founding Dean of the College of Business and Economics. He was actively involved in curriculum development and academic leadership. His dedication extends to supervising over 80 undergraduate research projects and actively participating in various university committees. Mr. Daud’s research interests include Entrepreneurship, Banking and Finance, and Islamic Economics, where he continues to inspire students and colleagues through his expertise and passion.

Abdulrahman Sheikh Ali

Abdulrahman Sheikh Ali Sufi is the Dean of the College of Engineering and Computing at the City University of Mogadishu. He was previously a US-licensed architect and has over ten years of experience in architectural planning, designing, and coordinating construction projects in the public, private, and institutional sectors in the United States. He worked on many architectural projects in the United States as a design architect, sustainable design consultant, and design project manager. In addition, he has over ten years of experience in academic leadership and teaching in higher education in the United States and Somalia. Sufi holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Texas, a Master of Science in Engineering (incomplete) from the University of Texas, and three certificates in computer-aided design software (CAD) for engineering and architecture. His research interests include: sustainably designed affordable housing for low-income families in Somalia; water scarcity and water resources management in Somalia; and solar energy in general and passive solar cooling systems specifically.

 

 

Dr. Arunachalam Sivakumar

Dr. Arunachalam Sivakumar is the Head of the Marine Sciences Department and the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources at City University in Mogadishu. He holds a doctorate in marine biology and a master’s degree in marine biology and oceanography from Annamalai University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in education from Annamalai University. With over 30 years of experience in the field of marine science and fisheries, Dr. Sivakumar specializes in marine ecology, natural resource management, and community development. His research focuses on coastal systems, particularly mangrove ecology, fisheries and integrated mangrove-aqua farming. He has actively participated in numerous national and international conferences and workshops, where he has presented his research papers.

Authorization & Accreditation

City University of Mogadishu is authorized by the Ministry of Education, Directorate for Higher Education & Culture of the Federal Government of Somalia.
City University is a founding member of the East African Research and Innovation Management Association (EARIMA) and its Somali Chapter, a founding member of the Association of Somali Universities (ASU), and a member of the Somali Research and Educational Network (SomaliREN). We are also in the process of obtaining International Institutional recognition from several international accrediting agencies for the University and programmatic accreditation for specific programs within the university.
